Super new product from a fascinating producer who immediately neighbour the illustrious Vergelegen on the cool coastal slopes on the Helderberg, south of Stellenbosch. I know we say this all the time, but honestly, this one felt very like chablis, with that definite whiff of gunsmoke, edgy, just-ripe apple, and a bracing finish. Feels like real knife-edge winemaking, which is as it should be.

Produced from mature low-yielding vines. This wine's main asset is its wonderful rich mouthfeel, which dominates the palate. Has a lovely honeyed nose with ripe citrus and hints of peach. The palate is bursting with honeyed fruit, again ripe citrus and stone fruit, it's quite soft in style yet with a fresh, clean, minerally edge to the the finish.

'These are marvellous wines, showing unbelieveable crystalline purity, minerality, concentration and length. They are all barrel fermented, with varying degrees of new oak. However, the use of oak is subtle and integrates perfectly with each wine. We have seldom tasted such a consistent range from any producer;each wine demonstrates subtle differences in terroir. We cannot recommend them highly enough.' - Thorman Hunt - but we agree! This wine has a toasty richness and power that utterly belies its relatively straightforward origin, and lifts it right out of its peer group.

Silky and sleek on the palate with a nose which brings to mind warm baked gingerbread and butter. Add some ripe peaches and nuts. It is the mouthfeel which places this wine firmly in the memory. Perfectly aligned acidity leads to a refined and attenuated finish. The wine goes on..... Deliciously chewy phenolics add textural interest and you are left with an overall impression of a wine which flows naturally from start to glorious finish.

Michel Bouzereau Bourgogne Chardonnay 2006 - France

Although technically only a humble bourgogne blanc, the secret to this wine is literally in the small print on the label. It states that Bouzereau own and harvest vines in Meursault, one of the greatest white wine villages in Burgundy and, by extension, on the planet. This is actually a young vine Meursault, showing plenty of toasty complexity, creamy width and wide stone fruit associated with the village. Very long.

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2005, Christian Moreau - France

Huge, powerful nose features bright citrusy fruit, spice, and smoke; extremely attractive. Even better on the palate as this Chablis has everything going for it. There's so much material here to work with, a big powerful, complex wine with lots of ripe fruit extract and remarkable depth. Quite youthful with excellent acidity, this Chablis kept getting better and better as it opened in the glass. The oaky component became more prominent as it sat; a few thought it was to excess. Long, gripping finish. This magnificent Grand Cru should improve with cellaring. Bravo Christian and Fabien Moreau!- Robert Parker

Tapanappa, Tiers Vineyard, Chardonnay - Australia

Sourced and made in the vineyard from the great Australian winemaker, Brian Croser. The aromas are subtle varietal white peach and clove, with marzipan and brioche contributed by the malo-lactic, yeast lees contact and oak. A savoury finish and the persistence of the flavours. The 2007 Tapanappa Tiers Chardonnay will develop spicy honey and brulée characters with bottle age of up to 10 years.
