A Mano Bianco Fiano/Greco - Italy

Wonderful floral notes on the nose with underlying apricots and zesty citrus characteristics. On the palate it is fresh and vibrant with great concentartion of apricots and lovely limey zesty citrus. Very well balanced with crisp acidity and leading to a dry finish. A wonderful example of modern Pulgian wines and excellent value for money.

Davenport Vineyards Horsmonden Dry White 2006 - England

Winery:

Produced from the organic vineyard down at Rotherfield, this is wine is made from Ortega. A bone-dry white wine, made in a "Loire" style. It has plenty of fruit and tangy citrus flavours, with a hint of yeast in the background, good concentration and length. It has been awarded a Gold medal in the 2006 Soil Association Organic Food Awards, judged against about 80 wines from overseas - the first time they entered this competition and it took the top prize.

One Block Muscat, Domaine Treloar - France

Winery:

Dry Muscat is often overlooked in favour of Gewurz or other dry, aromatic varieties; most people think of Muscat in terms of hugely sweet, exotic, fortified wines such as Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. This just off-dry but still zingy despite the perfume and overtones of sweetness. Plenty of telltale grapeiness, rose petal and aromatic herbs on the nose also the freshness of the palate stops this being soapy or blousy as candied stone fruit is just held in check.

Jurtschitsch Gruner Veltliner 'Kamptal' - Austria

Winery:

We once put a bottle of this unpronounceable wine on tasting in the shop, and sold cases of it that afternoon! Unoaked, with firm acidity, it shows ripe limes/citrus flvours, with excellent aroms, concentration and real length. Unusual but a great option for those bored of sauvignon blanc. It'd make far better food pairings, too.

Vesevo Sannio Falanghina 2008 - Italy

Winery:

Little-known but high quality variety from Campania in Southern Italy, from one of the region’s best producers; allegedly the variety used in Falernian, one of the most prestigious wines of the ancient world. This one got a Gold at the 2005 Decanter World Wine Awards, so it’s doing OK in modern times too! Using low fermentation temperatures, scented, zingy citrus flavours are captured that are a real joy.

Margan Semillon 2008, Hunter Valley - Australia

Winery:

Green gold in colour with sweet perfumed fruit on the nose. The palate is mouth filling with ripe fruit characters up front, a full middle palate and a crisp clean acid finish. The fruit characters on the palate will further intensify and complex as the wine matures. The wine is drinking superbly now, however will reward mid-term cellaring. Due to its full, soft nature the wine will match with a wide array of food.

A blend of the Rhone white varieties of Roussanne and Marsanne, along with a civilising dollop of Chardonnay. This is a rich, full-bodied, fairly hedonistic wine that has peach, apricot and plenty of length. Winemaker David Hohnen is an Aussie legend, being the founder of both Cloudy Bay and Cape Mentelle, two fantastic Estates in New Zealand and W. Australia respectively.

We were astonished by the quality of this when we first tasted it; we thought it was a minerally, complex Condrieu. For it to be half the price of even basic Condrieu is a massive bargain. Fabulous purity, vibrancy and depth of aroma and flavour. Fruit character is of refined peach and white flower.

Gewurztraminer - France

Winery:

Produced from the young vines (ie under 15 years of age)in several grand cru vineyards. This gives it great intensity and freshness; although slightly off-dry, the wine shows beautiful balance. It is full-bodied, with ripe flavours of lychee and musky spice. Served by the glass in Nobu for ages; obviously a decent match with Oriental food!

Planeta Cometa 2006 - Italy

Winery:

This is Planeta's Fiano. It has become a bit of a cult favourite. 14.5% alcohol. Quite a deep colour. Lovely perfumed, aromatic nose. Peach, honey, lime, oak. It's a big wine more like a red wine in texture and structure. Full, intense aromas of grapefruit, with a limey streak,and some subtle oak on the palate. Big powerful and complex, really tangy and ripe that retains good acidity. Complex and long. It's very impressive.
