Shiraz BlendsThis section was created as homage to shiraz's remarkable ability to blend with almost anything! Although it meets its classical partners in grenache and mourvedre in Chateauneuf du Pape, and also sometimes the white viognier in Cote Rotie, it can morph itself to suit almost anything, it seems. Perhaps, then, this section should be seen as more of a wine style; a dry but soft, full-bodied, juicy, peppery, opulent style that shiraz seems to lend to so many of its mutations. Old world will tend towards ruggedness and structure, new world to juice and jam, but the principle remains the same; lots of body, width richness, and plenty of alcohol too! |

The Ruins Organic Syrah Cabernet 2005, Bon Cap - South Africa
Winery:
This medium-full bodied wine shows great complexity from its two noble varietal components. The Syrah dominates on the nose with plenty of elegant white and black pepper spice and red berry fruits. The Cabernet's structure and length ensure a wine with backbone and enough substance to age for 2-3 years. This elegant and fairly complex wine makes a great companion to spicy dishes and casseroles.

Dom de la Vieille Julienne 2004, Les Fiefs de.. V d P R - France
Winery:
Domaine de la Vieille Julienne are a truly stellar producers of top quality Chateauneuf-du-Pape; this this entry level effort, and it’s a wonder in its own right. Using the same grape varieties as the chateaunuefs, a soft, plummy yet elegant wine is produced that belies its humble status as a Vin d ePays. This is because most of the land used is actually within Chateauneuf, with just a little disqualifying percentage added from outside the appellation.

Domaine La Soumade Cotes du Rhone 2005 - France
Winery:
A deep, rich, intense and generally very serious Cotes du Rhone, that will reward keeping for a few months, and decanting/airing before drinking. It will cope with most foods one could throw at it but will show best with a richly sauced game stew of some sort. Alternatively, we drink it with a sausage stew with plenty of rosemary, chickpeas, tomatoes, and whatever else is in the fridge!

Now making wines of great quality, with richness, colour and concentration that others in the Ventoux can only dream of. They use the same varieties as in neighbouring Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and indeed, these wines have some of the same spiciness and width. “One of the superstar estates of the Cotes du Ventoux” – Robert Parker.

Domaine la Soumade Rasteau Cuvee Prestige 2005 - France

'Earthy tannin, plenty of chocolate, scorched earth, sweet black cherry and herbal notes dominate the 2004 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Rasteau Cuvee Prestige. This big, full-bodied, muscular, almost savage wine needs 2-3 years of cellaring; it should age well for a decade. Drink 2006-2016. 88-90 points.` - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, February 2006

Domaine Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 'Les Olivets' 2005 - France
Winery:
Initially this wine has the forward fruit character of a New World wine. After a little time in the glass it opens out to show herbs and stony minerality, followed by red fruits and a touch of lavender. The palate is tightly knit, fine but chewy tannins, lovely savoury notes, green olives, musky fruits and gravel. Excellent drinking now and should drink well for another 5 years.

Le Cigare Volant, Bonny Doon - USA
Winery:
A little bit of a stylistic departure for Bonny Doon. Since I have been hanging out with Patrick Ducournau, I have learned the mantra: "I will fear no tannin." Cigare has always been fruit-driven (in the Australian parlance) and usually has had the soft, plush texture of the upholstery one finds in a vintage Citroën. We have upped the ante and given the wine a little more grip, more conjones, if you will. I think that in doing so, we have enchanced this Cigares ability to age. Varietal composition: 34% Grenache, 33% Syrah, 27% Mourvédre, 2% Viognier, 2% Cinsault and 2% Carignane.
