Cabernet Sauvignon BlendsCabernet sauvignon reaches the zenith of its powers when blended with a little of the classic options of merlot or cab franc. In the new world it's also blended with Syrah, but this section is overwhelmingly devoted to cabernet-merlots; the structure of the former with the roundness of the latter providing the arguably the greatest wine blend of all. |
Wine List for Cabernet Sauvignon Blends
|
Calbuco Cabernet Merlot 2008 - Chile
Winery:
A blend of ripe Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives colour, flavour and backbone and Merlot, which provides a fleshiness and rounded character. The Calbuco wines are named after a 2,000 meter volcano in the Andes that last erupted in 1972. Calbuco is clearly visible for miles around thanks to the brilliant Chilean light. This brilliant light also helps to ripen the grapes, which in turn gives a wine that is full and flavoursome.

Chateau Courtade-Dubuc, premieres cotes de Bordeaux - France
Winery:
Fleshy, generous depth of black fruit, surprising width of mid-palate for Bordeaux at this level. We normally dread trying to buy sub-£10 Bordeaux these days, it being a pretty thankless task, but this delightful wine has solved our problems right up to the £12 point with ease.

Meerlust Red 2007 - South Africa
Winery:
Aromas of lovely fresh blackcurrant leaf, plum and a bit of cherry backed up by denser richer notes of coffee and cedar wood. The palate is reminiscent of left bank Bordeaux, say a St Julien. The fruit is ripe and flavoursome with classic hints of cassis and dark fruits. It possesses a pronounced freshness balanced by warmer, richer characteristics, all blended harmoniously together. A very well made wine with fine grained tannins, bright acidity and well managed use of oak. Approachable but but could age for 4-6 yea

Warwick Three Cape Ladies 2005 - South Africa
Winery:
Each component of this Cape blend offers its own qualities. This vintage shows an explosion of fruit on the nose which is largely attributable to the Cabernet sauvignon and Pinotage components. The Pinotage is soft and sweet while the Merlot and Shiraz offers a subtle spiciness. The Cabernet Sauvignon is the backbone of the blend. Ripe tannins with an innate softness that will mature with cellaring. Full on the palate with a sweetness on the finish. This blend brings the best of Pinotage to the classic French varieties.
Serving temperature: 16-18°C
Food recommendations: Serve with a spicy tomato stew made with sun-ripened tomatoes or black mushroom risotto.

Vilafonte Series M 2003 - South Africa
Winery:
Technically not a cabernet blend as it is 41% merlot, cabernet 39%, with bits of malbec and cab franc.
This is a serious attempt at making South Africa's elusive Icon wine. It is indeed immensely replete, stylish, and well-crafted, showing a full, dense palate of dark fruit and secondary complexities, and considerable length. Ageing potential is certainly in the region of 10-15 years should you wish.

Chateau Canon la Gaffeliere 2004 Saint Emilion grand Cru - France
Winery:
"Here is an interesting wine, showing notes of high-toned fruit on the nose, perhaps with a slightly jammy character, but certainly with some dense, meaty undertones. A fat style on the palate, just a touch inky, with piles of dense, ripe, meaty-beefy fruits. It has a very rich style with a soft, fleshy and flattering texture, but there is nice if rather subdued acidity. There is plenty of appeal for me; it is just on the edge for me in terms of ripeness and extraction, but I don't think it has gone too far. Really very good indeed." the Wine Doctor, Nov 2008

Ch. Cos d'Estournel 1996, 2nd Growth St Estephe - France
Winery:
Made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, this is a huge, backward wine. The 1996 possesses an opaque purple color, as well as pure aromatics consisting of cassis, grilled herbs, coffee, and toasty new oak. Massive in the mouth, and one of the most structured and concentrated young Cos d'Estournels I have ever tasted, this thick, structured, tannic wine has closed down significantly since bottling. It requires 7-8 years of cellaring, and should last for 30-35 years. It is a fabulous Cos, but patience is required. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030. Robert Parker (93pts).

Ridge Monte Bello 2004 - USA
Winery:
Monte Bello famously upstaged the Bordeaux first growths at the legendary Judgement of Paris 1976 tasting, that turned the World of Wine on its head. In 2006 (the 30th Anniversary of the original tasting), Monte Bello actually won again at a repeat tasting, confirming its status in the pantheon of World Wine. The 2004 is still dense and very tightly knit, but offers a promising nose of tar, briery creme de cassis, toast, and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, with abundant tannin, and rich texture, it will last for many years.
